Home Minister, Shri. P. Chidambaram visited Minicoy on 27th December, 2010. He was accompanied by Administrator, Shri. J.K. Dadoo. On his arrival at helipad, Minister was received by Member of Parliament, Shri. Hamdullah Sayeed, Collector and Development Commissioner, Dr. Hon'ble Home Minister, P. Chidambaram Visits Minicoy N.Vasantha Kumar and Deputy Collector, Shri. Rajanish Kumar Singh by presenting bouquet. Superinetendent of Police, Shri. Ranvir Singh, Chairperson, VDP, Smt. Amina Alibebege were also present. The Minister was given a Guard of Honour by the Lakshadweep Police. He was introduced to DP/VDP members, Political leaders, Village Moopans and heads of institutions before being led by Lava dance to the inaugural site. Shri. Chidambaram inaugurated the newly constructed Aviation Refuelling Station by cutting a ribbon..


“From the helipad, Shri. Chidambaram proceeded to the inhabited area and inaugurated the first ever Coastal Police Station in Minicoy. Thereafter he addressed the people in a colourful function organized in the Golden Junbilee Park. He was given a warm reception with Bandiya Dance by Lakshadweep Kala Academy near Coastal Police Station and with another beautiful dance by girl students of Senior Basic Schools near the Golden Jubilee Park.

Home Minister, Shri. P. Chidambaram said that the Govt. wants the islands to develop in everyway- infrastructure, roads, schools, health care, drinking water, sanitation and above all transport facilities that connect the islands as well as islands to the mainland of India. He was addressing in a public function at the Golden Jubilee Park here in Minicoy after inaugurating the Aviation Refuelling Station at helipad and Coastal Police Station near Dak Bungalow. Minister said that he had visited two other islands sometime ago and that he had promised at that time to visit Minicoy this year. Refuelling Station is opened so that the helicopters that come here need not go to Kavaratti for refuelling; it can be refuelled here itself and it also improves the safety of helicopter and makes it possible to have more helicopter sorties to Minicoy.





He said that Coastal Police Station established at a cost of 30 lakhs with 60 ranks and all the equipments will improve security of all the people living in the beautiful island as well as security of the island itself. All the 11 inhabited islands are very important for Govt. of India and that they are particularly dear to his heart as the Home Minister. In the HMAC meeting held in New Delhi last week every item was discussed and when the decisions taken in the meeting are Govt. wants Islands to Develop in everyway. -Shri. P. Chidambaram implemented, people will find that the Adminsitration is more sensitive to their needs and many of their needs are attended to very shortly, he added.Expressing happiness over
the functioning of one of the best schools available in India namely Navodaya Vidyalaya in Minicoy, Minister said that equally people should have best medical care. He said he is aware of the difficulties in getting doctors but is confident that
one of the new ideas suggested by him would bear fruit and the Govt. will pay special attention to health care and medical care to the people of the islands. He said that health education is very important, especially to married persons as many men are working on merchant ships and the Administrator has been told to find ways by which, from time to time, people can come and impart health education to the people of the island.Member of Parliament, Adv. Hamdullah Sayeed also spoke in the meeting. He expressed sincere thanks to the Minister for having spared time to visit Minicoy Island. On the occasion, Administrator, Shri. J.K.Dadoo presented a memento to the Home Minister. Shri. Ranvir Singh, Superintendent of Police welcomed and Collector and Development Commissioner, Dr. N. Vasantha Kumar proposed vote of thanks. Deputy Collector, Shri. Rajanish Kumar Singh, Chairperson VDP, Smt. Amina Alibebege and Director, Port, Shipping and Aviation, Dr. M.S. Sayed Ismail Koya also were there on the dais.



After the public meeting, Minister met the DP/VDP members, Village Moopans and Political party leaders separately and heard their grievances. He also received their representations. Before proceeding to helipad the Home Minister visited Aoumagu Village and interacted with the people. He left Minicoy by helicopter same day afternoon accompanied by the Member of Parliament and Administrator.
